Good date ideas in Nottingham give you a clear meeting place and enough space to talk. A café can be the whole plan. A gallery or game can add a shared activity without committing you to an entire day.

The eight options below distinguish city-centre choices from places that need a separate journey. For a first meeting, choose a staffed public venue, arrange your own transport and agree the plan together.

Venue information checked on 28 September 2026. Nottingham Contemporary’s galleries are between exhibitions, although its café and shop remain open. Debbie Bryan also lists a different address from the one still found in older guides.

Start with the atmosphere, not the most unusual activity

For a straightforward conversation, consider Broadway’s café-bar or the café at Nottingham Contemporary while it is open. For something to do together, compare Dice Cup, a Debbie Bryan craft session and Lost City mini golf.

The Castle, New Art Exchange and Lakeside Arts offer different cultural settings. Check the programme and travel first. A city-centre café and an out-of-centre exhibition are not interchangeable when somebody has only an hour available.

1. Broadway: a café date with an optional film

Broadway’s café-bar on Broad Street provides a place to talk without booking cinema tickets. You can meet for coffee or food and save the film for another time if conversation is the priority.

If you do choose a screening, arrive with time to meet beforehand and decide whether you want to talk afterwards. Watching a whole film together tells you less about conversation than the ten minutes around it.

Best suited to: film fans or a simple central meeting. Check first: opening times, food service and current building notices. The café-bar serves alcohol as well as other drinks; check with your date if they prefer a venue with no alcohol at all.

2. Nottingham Contemporary: café now, galleries when reopened

Nottingham Contemporary is a useful cultural meeting point, but an exhibition changeover affects the plan. At our review, its visit notice said the galleries were closed while new exhibitions were installed. The shop and café remained open.

That makes a café visit a different proposition from “let’s look round the exhibitions”. Check the current notice rather than treating the building’s opening hours as confirmation that all galleries are available. Admission arrangements for the next exhibition should also be checked directly.

Best suited to: a central café meeting, or a gallery date once the current programme is confirmed. Check first: the visit page and Blend café details. Do not promise a particular exhibition based on an old listing.

3. Dice Cup: choose a game that leaves room to talk

Dice Cup on Mansfield Road is a board-game café with a games library. Ask for a short beginner-friendly game rather than selecting something that requires a lengthy explanation.

The library charge is separate from deciding what you want to eat or drink. Confirm the current fee and table arrangements before setting off. You can learn a lot about enjoying an activity together without making winning the purpose of the date.

Best suited to: people who like having something small to do while talking. Check first: prices, table availability, access and the current opening times. Agree in advance if either person prefers cooperative games or wants to avoid competitive activities.

4. Debbie Bryan: a planned craft session, at the current address

Debbie Bryan’s creative experiences can give a date a practical focus. Pick a craft you both want to try and check what is included, how long it lasts and whether refreshments are part of the booking.

The official contact page currently gives the address as first floor, 4–6 St Peter’s Gate, above Tokenhouse. Do not head to an older Lace Market address copied from another guide. Ask directly about access to the first-floor space before booking.

Best suited to: an agreed activity date rather than a surprise. Check first: workshop availability, full cost, location and access. Choose a sociable short session if getting to know each other is more important than mastering a technique.

5. Lost City Adventure Golf: indoor mini golf at the Cornerhouse

Lost City Adventure Golf offers themed indoor courses at the Cornerhouse. One round gives you a clear activity without obliging you to spend the whole evening together.

Its indoor setting is useful in poor weather, but themed lighting, music and other groups may make it livelier than a quiet café. Choose it because that sounds enjoyable to both people, not because every first date needs an activity.

Best suited to: a playful meeting with natural turns and pauses. Check first: the current prices and route into the venue. The operator describes accessible courses, but contact it about the particular access arrangements you need.

6. Nottingham Castle: a longer cultural date

Nottingham Castle combines museum and gallery spaces with its grounds. It needs more commitment than a coffee, so agree the visit, ticket cost and likely length rather than springing it on somebody at the meeting point.

Keep the first plan focused. You do not have to add every attraction or a cave tour. The Castle’s separate cave-tour information describes steps and uneven surfaces, so cave access should never be assumed from access to the main site.

Best suited to: a planned visit with shared cultural interests. Check first: current ticket terms, opening, access and travel arrangements. Meet in the public visitor area; a heritage setting is not a reason to wander away somewhere isolated with a new acquaintance.

7. New Art Exchange: a separate trip to Hyson Green

New Art Exchange is on Gregory Boulevard in Hyson Green, outside the immediate city-centre cluster. Its exhibitions and café can make a useful plan, but confirm the current programme before travelling specifically for a show.

This is not an attraction to add casually to a ten-minute walk between central venues. Agree where you will meet and how each person will travel. The official visitor page gives local transport and opening information.

Best suited to: a deliberately planned exhibition or café visit. Check first: what is showing, admission arrangements, café availability and access. The regular visitor schedule currently excludes Sundays and Mondays, so verify the date you choose.

8. Lakeside Arts: a gallery date at University Park

Lakeside Arts at University Park offers exhibitions and other arts programming. Choose a confirmed gallery visit rather than assuming an event is running whenever the wider campus is accessible.

For a first meeting, make the staffed gallery or coffee shop the destination. You need not turn the plan into a quiet lakeside walk. The out-of-centre location also means that travel and finishing time deserve a little more thought.

Best suited to: people who want to discuss art and have time for the journey. Check first: the gallery and café opening times, which differ across spaces. Do not assume the gallery is open on Mondays.

Three ways to turn the options into a date

Keep it simple: choose a central café with a clear indoor meeting point. Agree an hour, then decide together whether another stop appeals. There is no need to describe it as “only coffee”.

Make it activity-led: choose a short game at Dice Cup, one mini-golf course or a booked craft session. Ask about the total cost for two and avoid packages that assume a larger group.

Plan a cultural visit: pick an exhibition that is confirmed to be open, then leave time for conversation. Current changeovers make this especially important at Nottingham Contemporary and other programme-led galleries.

Cheap and rainy-day date ideas in Nottingham

A coffee date gives you a predictable small commitment. Gallery visits may also be low-cost, but check the specific show and any booking conditions rather than assuming all arts programming is free.

Board games and indoor mini golf are weather-resistant alternatives, not necessarily the cheapest. Add travel and refreshments to your budget. Ask about seating and noise if either person needs a quieter environment.

Frequently asked questions

Are all these places in Nottingham city centre?

No. New Art Exchange is in Hyson Green and Lakeside Arts is at University Park. The distinction matters when deciding where to meet, especially if you are arriving by train or travelling home separately.

Is a walk by the water a good first meeting?

Not as a default. A public waterside path can be quiet or isolated. Choose a busy staffed venue first, and only extend the plan somewhere you both feel comfortable. Being on a second date is not automatic proof that an isolated setting is appropriate either.

What should we check before booking?

Confirm the actual address, opening, programme, price, access and cancellation terms. Debbie Bryan’s address and Contemporary’s exhibition changeover illustrate why that final check is worth making.
