Altrincham works well for a date when you want a few options without planning a complicated trip. You can meet for food at Market House, choose a film or book a local theatre production. Ice skating is another possibility if you would both enjoy something more active.

Start by agreeing what sort of meeting you want. A first coffee or lunch needs less commitment than a show with a fixed finish time. You can always arrange a second visit for the activity you did not choose.

Share a meal at Market House

Market House is a useful starting point when you like different kinds of food. Its traders include Honest Crust pizza, Great North Pie and Market House Coffee. Look at the current food options together before ordering, especially if either of you has dietary requirements.

The appeal is being able to choose separately and eat together. You do not have to agree on one restaurant’s menu or commit to a formal dinner. For a first date, lunch or a drink can be enough, with time to browse nearby afterwards if you both want to.

Allow about an hour for a meal, and expect a busy food hall rather than a quiet private dining room. If hearing each other easily is important, look at the seating and noise level before ordering. Have another central café in mind in case it feels too crowded.

Market House and the outdoor market have different trading schedules. The food hall currently opens Tuesday to Sunday, while the outdoor retail market operates on selected days. Neither should be assumed to be open on Monday. Check the directory’s current hours and individual trader information before travelling specifically for a particular stall.

Add a short market browse, without making shopping the whole date

If you are meeting on an outdoor market day, arrive with a little spare time to look around before eating. This works best when you both enjoy browsing and are happy to stop when something catches your attention.

You might compare food you would cook, look for a small gift or simply see which traders are there that day. There is no obligation to buy anything, and it is worth saying so if one person is keeping costs down. Avoid making the other person follow you through a long personal shopping list.

Keep this as an optional half-hour addition to your Market House plan. Stalls vary, and the outdoor market is not a reliable substitute for an indoor booking in heavy rain. If the weather turns, stay with your meal rather than trying to complete a shopping route.

A specific meeting point helps here. Agree on an entrance on Greenwood Street and send it in advance, instead of hoping to spot each other somewhere in the market area.

See a film at Everyman, with time to talk first

Everyman Altrincham is in the Stamford Quarter and has a bar and food offer alongside its screens. It suits an evening when you both want to see the same film and would enjoy discussing it afterwards.

Choose the screening together. A film one person is desperate to see may be a poor choice if the other dislikes the genre. Check the runtime as well as the start time, particularly if either of you has an early journey home.

Meet around 30 to 45 minutes before the screening if you want a proper conversation before going in. The food and drink information explains the venue’s bar and in-seat service. Decide whether you are eating there or just having a drink, so one person does not arrive expecting dinner.

For a first meeting, a film works best with that extra talking time. If you mainly want to get to know each other, choose coffee instead and save the cinema for another evening. Check access arrangements for your particular screen when booking.

Book a production at Altrincham Garrick

The Altrincham Garrick Playhouse on Barrington Road gives you another reason to plan an evening in town. Browse the programme together and pick a production you are both curious about, rather than assuming every theatre date needs to be a special occasion.

The main auditorium and Lauriston Studio are different spaces. Check which one your ticket names; the studio has its own entrance from the car park. Arriving with time to spare is more pleasant than searching for the right door as the performance starts.

Agree whether to eat beforehand or simply meet for a drink. Leave a sensible gap if you are coming from the market area, and check the production’s finish time before promising a late meal afterwards. The interval may be useful for a quick chat, but it should not be your only chance to speak.

Use the theatre’s booking and access information if you need help choosing seats or arranging access. Ask before paying if a particular seat or entrance matters to either of you.

Try a public skating session at Planet Ice

Planet Ice has an Altrincham rink with public skating sessions. This is worth suggesting if you are both happy to try it, including the possibility of being beginners. It is less suitable as a surprise for someone who may dislike skating or have balance concerns.

Check the Altrincham timetable and select a public session. A hockey fixture, lesson or other scheduled activity is not the same booking. Confirm skate hire arrangements and the session’s duration before agreeing on the total cost and meeting time.

Wear comfortable layers and follow the rink’s guidance. If one of you is more experienced, let the beginner set the pace. You do not need to spend every minute on the ice or turn the outing into an informal lesson.

Leave time for a warm drink afterwards so you can actually talk. The activity may provide plenty to laugh about, but the conversation afterwards is often the part that makes it feel like a date. A shorter session followed by a drink is usually enough for one outing.

Keep the plan easy to follow

Check your route and return service rather than leaving the journey home until the end of the evening.

For a first date, Market House gives you the most flexibility. A film, play or skating session needs more agreement beforehand. Our Greater Manchester date ideas also include Dunham Massey and other options when you fancy a longer outing beyond the town centre.
