Chorley has enough for a date that starts simply and leaves room to stay longer. You could meet over coffee near the market, paint pottery together or choose a play and have a drink before the performance.
Begin with the amount of time you both want to spend together. An hour in a café is a complete first date. A theatre evening or a pottery session is a different invitation, with a booking and a longer commitment.
The town centre, Astley Hall and the pottery studio are separate meeting points. Name the venue when arranging the date, rather than expecting someone to find you somewhere around Chorley.
Browse the markets, then sit down for a drink
Chorley Markets offer a good daytime plan if you enjoy looking around without needing a shopping list. The covered market and the larger Tuesday street market have different trading arrangements, so check which one will be running.
Start at a named café, have a drink and decide whether to browse afterwards. That gives you time to talk before the distraction of stalls, queues and people moving between shops.
As you look around, point out the things you would actually use or eat. Food, flowers and everyday objects often lead to easier conversations than a sequence of questions about jobs and hobbies.
There is no expectation to buy anything for each other. A first date can become uncomfortable if one person turns a casual browse into choosing presents or paying for the other’s shopping.
Allow around an hour for coffee and a short browse, or longer if you agree on lunch. Use the council’s market opening information rather than assuming all stalls trade whenever the surrounding shops are open.
If it rains, keep the café as the main plan. The covered market gives you some shelter, but moving between the street stalls and other businesses still means going outside.
Meet at Astley's café and gallery
Astley Hall, Coach House and Park can work well for a daytime date, particularly if you begin at Café Ambio and leave the rest of the visit flexible. Check the café’s own hours before choosing your meeting time.
The Coach House Gallery offers free admission and changing exhibitions. Look at the current programme and choose a display that appeals to both of you. You can compare a favourite piece over coffee without needing to know anything about art.
Astley Hall itself needs a more careful check. During its West Wing restoration, the advertised 2026 visit is limited to parts of the east wing’s ground floor. Do not plan around seeing the whole house.
The visitor page contains seasonal opening information, so confirm the arrangements for your date. The hall, gallery and café are not interchangeable: one being open does not guarantee that the others are available.
Choose the entrance to match your plan. Hallgate is the practical arrival point for the hall and Coach House, while arriving from the town centre involves walking through the park.
For a first meeting, arrange to meet inside the staffed café during service hours. A short daytime stroll can follow if you both want one; there is no need to begin with a long route through quieter park areas.
Paint pottery at The Alabaster Jar
The Alabaster Jar is a paint-your-own pottery studio in Chorley. You choose a ready-made ceramic piece and decorate it, rather than learning to throw a pot on a wheel.
This suits a couple who would like something to do with their hands while talking. Choose a straightforward design so the activity leaves room for conversation, instead of demanding all your attention.
The studio uses glaze and fires the finished work. Ask when your pieces will be ready and how collection works. Each person should be able to arrange collection independently, without making another meeting feel compulsory.
Check the cost of the pieces you like before starting. Agreeing a comfortable budget is easier than discovering halfway through that one person has chosen something much more expensive.
For an evening date, look at the studio’s adult-only late openings. These are specific events for people aged 18 and over, with advance booking and a deposit, rather than ordinary late opening every night.
Allow a couple of hours for an unhurried daytime session, subject to the studio’s arrangements. For an advertised evening event, check its full duration and decide together whether that suits your journey home.
Choose a show at Chorley Theatre
Chorley Theatre offers a different kind of evening: a performance to share, with time around it to get to know each other. Choose the show together before buying seats.
A comedy, a play and a film screening can have very different atmospheres. Read the description and running time rather than booking something simply because two tickets are available.
Meet early enough for a drink and a conversation. The theatre’s bar opens before performances, but service stops close to the start so the show can begin on time.
Take the arrival time seriously. The venue warns that latecomers may have to wait and that leaving during a performance can prevent re-entry. Finish any meal with a comfortable margin rather than relying on slipping in late.
Afterwards, ask which moment stayed with the other person. You do not need a detailed review prepared; a shared laugh or a disagreement about a character is enough to start talking.
Check seating and access requirements directly when booking. For an early date, keep any drink afterwards optional, particularly if one person has a bus or train to catch.
Make room for conversation around a REEL film
REEL Chorley is in the Market Walk development. It is a useful wet-weather option, provided you allow time to speak before or after sitting quietly through the film.
Pick the film and screening type together. The cinema offers different experiences, including its Lounge option, so check exactly what you are booking and the total cost for two.
If this is a first meeting, have coffee beforehand. You can establish whether you feel comfortable together before spending a couple of hours facing the screen.
Check the expected finish time and leave enough time for your return journey. A film followed by a meal can work well for a later date, but it is a considerably longer plan than the screening alone.
Keep your Chorley plan straightforward
For a short daytime date, choose coffee and the market or the Coach House Gallery. For a creative afternoon, choose pottery. For an evening, make the theatre or cinema the main event.
Be cautious with older activity listings. The council has announced a replacement tenant for the former Escape Entertainment premises, so old bowling and adventure-golf recommendations should not be assumed current.
Our Lancashire date ideas link other town guides and suggest separate days out. Save those for another occasion rather than trying to fit two towns into one short date.
