County Londonderry, also known as County Derry, offers far more than one kind of date. You can choose city culture, a river-town afternoon or a day near the Roe Valley. Further afield, the coast, country houses and landscapes associated with Seamus Heaney give you distinctly different reasons to explore.
This guide uses the historic county as its geographic frame. Start with the local guide that best suits your plans, then consider one of the six wider outings below. The county’s north coast and inland destinations are spread apart, so choose a manageable area rather than trying to visit them all in one day.
Choose your city or town
Our Derry~Londonderry date guide suits couples who want city walls, contemporary art, craft browsing and evening entertainment. It also covers the current Derry Girls Experience, a riverside walk and the cathedral. Choose it for a date with several central possibilities.
The Coleraine date ideas combine Mountsandel, local history, a speciality market and playful indoor plans. A River Bann cruise can be the main event. It is a useful choice when you want a town-based day with a strong connection to the water.
Our Limavady date guide covers the Roe Valley, arts, golf games and swimming, with separate journeys to Benone and Crindle. Choose it for a flexible mix of town activities and outdoor excursions, planning the countryside transport before booking.
1. See Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demesne
Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demesne offer a coastal heritage day near Castlerock. The temple, ruined house and wider grounds give the visit more substance than a single viewpoint photograph.
Choose a route through the estate that suits your time and mobility. You can look at the architecture, pause over the sea views and talk about the striking choice of setting. Treat access to particular interiors as separate from permission to walk through the grounds.
Check the National Trust’s current access and admission information. The clifftop can be exposed, and paths vary in surface. Stay behind barriers and away from cliff edges, especially in strong wind. A breezy coast visit can feel quite different from the forecast in a sheltered town.
2. Walk the sands at Portstewart Strand
Portstewart Strand gives you a spacious beach-and-dunes outing. It suits a date where the main pleasure is walking side by side, looking out to sea and deciding together when to turn back.
Choose a modest out-and-back beach walk or a permitted dune route. The dunes are a habitat, not an invitation to make a new path. Use marked routes and keep an eye on changing conditions, especially where the beach meets water channels or estuary areas.
Check current parking, access and any seasonal restrictions. Follow local advice around vehicles and other beach users. Pack a layer and refreshments, or reserve a meal separately. Swimming is not assumed as part of this plan; sea conditions need their own assessment.
3. Spend time with poetry at Seamus Heaney HomePlace
Seamus Heaney HomePlace in Bellaghy explores the poet’s life and work through words, photographs and personal stories. You do not need to arrive as poetry experts to enjoy the connection between a writer and the place that shaped him.
Give yourselves time to listen and read without hurrying each other. Choose a passage or idea that stays with you, then talk about what it brought to mind. This can be a particularly good date when you enjoy discovering how the other person sees ordinary experiences.
Check exhibition booking and opening information. Performances in the Helicon have their own programme and tickets, so do not assume they are included with the exhibition. A drink afterwards gives you room to continue the conversation without rushing straight to another attraction.
4. Explore Springhill near Moneymore
Springhill offers a country-house visit with gardens and woodland in the Moneymore area. It is a different style of heritage date from the exposed ruins at Downhill, with a more domestic setting and a separate story to explore.
Decide whether the house is central to your plans. House tours and grounds have different opening arrangements, so choose a date when the parts you want to see are available. If you prefer fresh air, select a suitable estate walk and leave time for the gardens.
Use the National Trust calendar and access guide before travelling. Check any exhibition areas and refreshments separately, rather than assuming every part of the property opens together. Leave the visit some breathing room; one country house can comfortably supply the focus of an afternoon.
5. Follow a suitable route into Banagher Glen
Banagher Glen Nature Reserve, near Dungiven, is a quieter woodland choice. Its steep-sided valley and native trees make it appealing for couples who would rather spend time in a natural landscape than move between ticketed attractions.
Choose the route carefully. A shorter visit to the glen is different from committing to the longer forest and reservoir walk. Read the current trail information, agree how far you want to go and allow enough time for the return.
Wear suitable footwear and expect gradients and uneven or slippery ground. Follow the reserve’s rules and any temporary notices, and keep the outing within daylight. Bring water and food if you are planning a longer walk. This is a countryside visit, not a guaranteed café-and-toilets circuit.
6. Share a treetop challenge at The Jungle
The Jungle’s adult Tree Top Adventure, near Moneymore, offers a more energetic alternative to the county’s walks and heritage visits. Its taster and full-course options let you compare the commitment before deciding whether it suits you both.
The operator caters for couples and individuals, so you do not need to build a large group simply to enquire. Choose a bookable session for two, and read the current height, weight, fitness and clothing requirements before paying.
Support each other without making completion a test of courage. A fear of heights is a reasonable reason to choose something else. Allow for harnessing and the briefing, follow staff instructions and keep the rest of the day light enough to enjoy the activity properly.
Three ways to shape a date
A coastal day: choose Downhill for architecture and clifftop scenery, or Portstewart Strand for a beach walk. Build food around that choice. You can save the other destination for another visit rather than turning a relaxed outing into a drive between viewpoints.
A thoughtful inland afternoon: make HomePlace the main event, then leave time for a drink and conversation. Springhill is another good choice when you prefer house and garden history. Check the relevant calendar before choosing which experience to book.
A date with more movement: choose a Banagher route suited to both walkers, or reserve a treetop session at The Jungle. These need different preparation, but both benefit from an unrushed start. Arrange food afterwards and avoid an unnecessarily tight return journey.
Travel and practical planning
Use Translink to check rail and bus connections, then map the onward journey to the actual entrance. Derry~Londonderry and Coleraine offer useful public-transport starting points, but an inland attraction may need an additional bus, taxi or car journey.
Book the day’s main experience first. Exhibition admission, house tours and treetop sessions have different calendars, while coastal and woodland plans depend more heavily on conditions. In winter, keep outdoor walking within daylight and check for closures after severe weather.
The three local guides are intended to help you choose a base, not imply that every outing is close to every town. Look at the whole journey before combining destinations, especially when one lies inland and the other is on the coast.
County Londonderry date questions
Is County Derry a different place?
No. County Derry and County Londonderry are names used for the same historic county. The city is also known by both names. This guide uses County Londonderry for its title and Derry~Londonderry for the city destination.
Which option is best when the forecast is poor?
HomePlace provides an indoor focus, while the city and town guides include exhibitions, performances, cinema and other indoor activities. House tours depend on their calendar. A beach or treetop booking should not be treated as unaffected by strong wind or severe weather.
Which date needs the least advance planning?
A modest town walk with a café stop is usually simpler than a ticketed experience. For rural walks, review the route and conditions; for performances, tours and activities, reserve the specific session you want.
