Ilkeston date ideas for museum visits, films and afternoons together

An Ilkeston date can begin with a museum café, turn into a conversation about a film, or involve a friendly game of badminton. There is no need to leave town just to make meeting someone feel like an occasion.

Start by deciding how much time you both want to spend together. Coffee and a short browse suit a first meeting. A booked activity or a visit to Bennerley Viaduct makes more sense once you know a little about each other’s interests.

The suggestions below include places to talk, something to do when conversation pauses, and practical details that can change the plan. Suggested timings are for planning your date, rather than official tour lengths.

Begin with Erewash Museum and its café

Erewash Museum is in Dalby House, just off High Street. Its local-history collections make it an appealing place to start if you prefer looking at something together to sitting opposite a stranger for an hour.

Meet at the museum café first, then decide whether you would like to explore. The café was expanded during the museum’s refurbishment, which was completed in 2025. Check its service times before making it your meeting point.

Give yourselves around an hour for a drink and a selective look around. Everyday objects and stories about local work can lead to conversations about your own families, jobs or childhoods. You do not need to read every panel or know Ilkeston’s history beforehand.

The museum’s regular opening days are Thursday to Saturday, with additional Wednesday opening during school holidays. Check the current visitor information for your date. A weekday afternoon plan needs more checking than simply assuming a museum will be open.

For access requirements, contact the museum about the rooms you would like to visit. An older house can offer different routes through different parts of the building, so explain what would make the visit comfortable for you.

Choose a film at the Scala

Ilkeston’s Scala is listed by REEL Cinemas. Choosing this town-centre cinema lets you build an evening around one film without turning the date into a trip to a large shopping complex.

Swap two or three possible films before booking. That gives both people a say and avoids committing someone to horror, a long drama or a franchise they have never followed. Check the running time as well as the start time.

Meet for a drink before the screening if this is your first date. A cinema seat is an awkward place to make introductions, and arriving just before the lights go down leaves little time to settle in.

Afterwards, you already have something to discuss. Ask which character they believed, whether the ending worked, or what they would have cut. You can disagree about a film without turning the conversation into a test of taste.

Allow the film’s full running time, arrival time and whatever conversation you want around it. Check the venue’s access arrangements directly before booking particular seats. A historic cinema’s exterior tells you little about the route to your seat.

Play badminton at Rutland Sports Park

Rutland Sports Park on West End Drive lists badminton among its activities. A court booking can work well when you both prefer moving around to a long meal.

Ask about casual availability, the length of the booking and whether rackets and shuttlecocks are supplied. Agree how you will divide the cost before paying. Bring suitable trainers and water, and leave time to change if you are coming straight from work.

For the first few rallies, forget the score. Try keeping the shuttle in play, then play a short game if you both want to. Someone who has not played since school should not spend the whole session defending against a regular club player.

This is a useful rainy-day choice because the activity itself is indoors. Afterwards, allow a little time for a drink rather than rushing from the court to separate cars. You will probably have more to laugh about than after another evening of messaging.

Book the court before arranging the rest of the date. General leisure-centre opening hours do not guarantee that a suitable slot is available.

Visit Bennerley Viaduct when the visitor centre is open

Bennerley Viaduct crosses the Erewash Valley between the Ilkeston and Awsworth sides. Its ironwork and elevated views offer a very different outing from a town-centre museum.

The new visitor centre and café opened in July 2026. Café opening depends on volunteer availability, so use the current website rather than older articles describing facilities that were still under construction.

For a later date, allow roughly 60 to 90 minutes for the visitor centre, a walk onto the viaduct and a drink. That is a suggested short visit, not a commitment to a longer canal or countryside circuit.

A listed guided tour is worth considering if you both enjoy engineering or local history. You can listen together, ask questions and continue the conversation afterwards. Check the tour’s starting point and booking arrangements rather than assuming it starts at whichever end you reach first.

This is an exposed outdoor structure. Check the forecast, current access information and the approach that suits your mobility. If either person dislikes heights, choose another activity without making it a challenge to overcome.

For a first meeting, start in a staffed café in town. Keep the viaduct for daylight, suitable weather and a date where you are both comfortable with an outdoor outing.

Put together a date that fits the time you have

For a short daytime meeting, arrange a museum café visit on an opening day and leave the galleries optional. Choose a clear meeting point inside the venue so you are not searching for each other around High Street.

For an evening, combine a drink with a Scala screening. If you want an active date, book Rutland Sports Park and make that the main event. There is no need to fit the cinema into the same evening.

Ilkeston station is separate from the main shopping streets and Market Place. Check the whole journey from your arrival point to the venue, including the return trip. Share the venue’s address rather than relying on the town name alone.

Keep one indoor alternative in mind for a viaduct plan, but check it is actually open. The museum’s limited weekly opening makes it unsuitable as an automatic fallback on any rainy day.
