Irvine makes it easy to build a date around the water. The harbour has a maritime museum and arts centre, while the beach gives you space for a longer conversation with the sea beside you.
There are active indoor options too, along with parkland away from the shore. These six ideas range from a short game of badminton to a leisurely afternoon exploring the town’s seafaring past.
Discover the Scottish Maritime Museum
The Scottish Maritime Museum’s Irvine site occupies the former Linthouse shipyard building. Boats, machinery and the stories of people who built and sailed ships fill a space that is worth seeing in its own right.
You do not need to know the difference between every kind of vessel to enjoy it. Look for a design that surprises you, or compare which jobs you would have wanted to try.
The museum is close to Irvine railway station, making it a useful choice when you are arriving by train. A café stop or harbour walk can follow the visit. Ask staff which vessels and additional displays are accessible that day, rather than assuming every part of the collection can be boarded.
Make an evening of the Harbour Arts Centre
The Harbour Arts Centre brings theatre, music and comedy to Harbour Street. Its programme gives you a reason to try something you might not ordinarily book, from a small live performance to a familiar favourite.
Pick a show together and meet before it starts, leaving enough time to talk over a drink or meal nearby. You will then have something shared to discuss on the way home.
There are also gallery exhibitions, which can suit a daytime visit when a performance feels like too much of a commitment. Use the current programme to see what is actually on. A show ticket and a gallery visit have different timings and booking arrangements.
Walk from the harbour towards the beach
For an outing with no ticket to organise, start on the harbourside and continue towards Irvine Beach. The change from boats and buildings to open sand gives the walk a pleasing sense of going somewhere.
You can keep it short, or continue along the beach when the weather and tide allow. The stone dragon in the beach park is a distinctive landmark to look for. The council’s coastal park information explains the newer facilities in this area.
Bring an extra layer even when the town feels warm. For a first meeting, agree a modest turnaround point and save a longer stretch of coast for another day.
Follow a trail through Eglinton Country Park
Between Irvine and Kilwinning, Eglinton Country Park offers woodland, a loch and the remains of Eglinton Castle. It is a good choice when you want a greener setting and a little more time outdoors.
Use the park map to choose a walk that fits your afternoon. The heritage trail is one option, with bridges and historic features to notice as you go. Taking a picnic lets you stop when you find somewhere you both like.
Entry to the park is free. Plan the journey separately from a harbourside outing, as this is not the next stop along the beach. The paths also vary, so use the council’s access information when choosing your route.
Book a badminton court at the Portal
A game at the Portal on High Street gives you an active date in the centre of Irvine. The sports hall accommodates badminton and other court activities.
Book a court through KA Leisure and ask about equipment hire if you do not have your own rackets. A session with just the two of you gives you time to practise, rally and play a few games at your own pace.
You can keep score, but you can also see how long you manage to keep the shuttle in the air. Choose the approach that leaves both of you wanting another game, then head into town for something to eat.
Try a few shots at the Gailes driving range
Just south of Irvine, the Toptracer range at the Gailes adds ball tracking and games to a driving range session. It offers a taste of golf without committing to a full round on a course.
Take turns hitting shots and compare the results on the screen. A closest-to-the-target challenge can be fun even when the longest drive is beyond either of you.
The range operates without advance booking, and clubs are available to hire. It is part of a separate leisure complex, so allow for getting there from central Irvine. It works well as the main activity before a meal nearby.
Three Irvine plans to choose from
A harbour afternoon
Visit the Maritime Museum, then take a stroll along Harbour Street and stop for a drink. Allow two or three hours as a starting point, with less walking if you would rather linger over the exhibits.
Fresh air and a picnic
Spend an afternoon at Eglinton Country Park, choosing your trail before setting off. Bring lunch and keep the rest of the day free, so there is no pressure to reach another attraction by a fixed time.
A show by the water
Book a performance at the Harbour Arts Centre and arrange an early meal nearby. If the weather is pleasant, add a short harbourside walk before taking your seats.
Getting your plans right
The railway station is useful for the museum and harbour area. Eglinton Country Park and the Gailes need their own travel plans, so decide which part of Irvine you want to spend time in before making bookings.
For rainy weather, the museum, a performance or badminton all offer different ways to spend time indoors. Free outdoor choices include the beach and Eglinton, with transport and any food purchases to budget for separately.
