North Lanarkshire offers more than one kind of date. You can choose a town-based performance or museum visit, spend time in an estate garden, try a creative class or arrange an activity on the canal.
Start with one of the four town guides below, then explore six additional outings across the council area. These are spread between places such as Kilsyth, Wishaw and Shotts, so choose a main destination rather than attempting a regional circuit.
Choose your town
Motherwell date ideas combine local history, Strathclyde Country Park, wildlife and sporting afternoons. The guide distinguishes the park walk from the separately ticketed Amazonia visit.
Cumbernauld date ideas cover Lanternhouse, the town museum, parkland, birds of prey and sports.
Coatbridge date ideas bring together Summerlee, Drumpellier and active options at the Time Capsule. Skating and the waterpark have different timetables and booking arrangements.
Airdrie date ideas include the Town Hall, woodland, sport and occasional observatory visits. Choose an announced opening if the night sky is your main reason for going.
1. Explore Colzium’s estate and walled garden
Colzium Lennox Estate, near Kilsyth, offers parkland, a walled garden and traces of the area’s history. It suits a date where you want somewhere interesting to wander without needing a packed itinerary.
Start with the garden and follow the available estate paths at your own pace. The visitor centre can add context to what you see outdoors. Leave time to stop rather than planning a route solely around distance.
The estate and visitor facilities have different access arrangements from the house. Colzium House and its museum are not normally open for casual visits; arrange access in advance if you want to see inside. Check the garden and café hours before relying on them.
2. Try a canal activity at Auchinstarry
At Auchinstarry Marina, near Kilsyth, Outdoor Trax advertises paddleboard, canoe and kayak hire, alongside lessons and tours. It offers a more active way to enjoy the Forth and Clyde Canal.
Contact the operator before choosing your session. Explain your experience and ask what works for two people. If you are new to paddling, an introductory lesson or suitable guided outing can make more sense than independent hire.
Confirm availability, equipment, clothing and the weather policy. The operator encourages advance booking, so do not assume someone will be ready to hire equipment whenever you arrive. You can still enjoy a short towpath walk if you prefer to stay on land.
3. Follow Roman traces at Croy Hill
Croy Hill preserves traces of the Antonine Wall and a Roman fort site between Croy and Dullatur. It offers a walk with a historical focus and views over the surrounding landscape.
Look for the surviving earthworks and the ditch cut through rock. Some of the former structures are no longer visible, so a little reading beforehand helps you understand what you are seeing. This is an archaeological landscape rather than a reconstructed fortress.
The site is free to visit and open throughout the year. Wear sturdy footwear, use the official access directions and leave enough daylight for the return. The exposed ground can feel quite different in wet or windy weather.
4. Take a woodland walk at Palacerigg
Palacerigg Country Park, outside Cumbernauld, offers waymarked trails and opportunities to notice local wildlife. It gives you a longer countryside option beyond the town’s central activities.
Choose a trail from the park information and agree the distance before starting. You might spend the visit listening for birds, looking at the trees or simply talking without a screen between you.
Check current facilities and route conditions, particularly after heavy rain. This suggestion is for the park’s woodland and walking trails. Do not plan around old descriptions of its former animal collection. Wildlife seen on a walk is never guaranteed.
5. Discover local stories at Shotts Heritage Centre
Shotts Heritage Centre is inside Shotts Library on Benhar Road. Its displays explore the people, industries and events that shaped the town, with free admission.
It is a modest, focused visit that works well for couples interested in local history. Give yourselves time to look at the objects and photographs, then talk about the details you found most surprising. Refreshments elsewhere can comfortably make up the rest of the date.
Confirm the opening hours with the library before travelling. The library and museum webpages currently show different schedules, so do not build a Saturday visit around an unconfirmed listing. Check the route from the station if you arrive by train.
6. Make something in clay at Pather Artworks
Pather Artworks, in Pather Community Centre in Wishaw, offers ceramics classes through North Lanarkshire’s arts programme. It gives you a date centred on learning and making rather than looking around a visitor attraction.
Choose an advertised adult class suited to your experience. The programme includes pottery sessions for different abilities, but a studio session and a taught class may have different expectations. Ask which option is appropriate if neither of you has used clay before.
Book two places and confirm whether the booking is for one session or a longer course. Ask about materials, firing and collecting finished work. A piece made during the date may need to stay at the studio afterwards.
Choose a plan that fits your interests
For history and outdoor time: choose Colzium or Croy Hill. Check the walking demands and treat access inside Colzium House as a separate arrangement.
For trying something together: arrange a suitable canal session at Auchinstarry or a pottery class in Wishaw. Confirm the booking before making the rest of your plans.
For a town-based date: use one of the four local guides. A performance, museum or single active session can be enough without adding a drive elsewhere.
Planning across North Lanarkshire
A place’s Glasgow postal address does not necessarily mean it is in central Glasgow. Evening events and rural outings need particular attention to the return trip.
North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire are separate council areas. If you are looking for Hamilton’s museums and nearby country-park options, use our Hamilton date ideas instead.
