Prestatyn can be a relaxed seaside meeting or the starting point for something more active. The beach and cinema are easy choices, while the old railway route through Meliden, a hill walk or a round of golf offer different ways to spend longer together.
The important distinction is between the coast and the higher ground behind town. A promenade stroll and a climb above Meliden are not interchangeable suggestions. These six ideas help you choose the effort, cost and amount of time that suit you both.
1. Meet beside the beach
Prestatyn’s seafront gives a date a simple beginning: meet near Nova, look out to sea and decide which way to walk. It is a useful plan when you want plenty of conversation and the freedom to finish after a short visit.
Stay on the promenade for the easiest version. Going onto the beach can be lovely in suitable conditions, but sand, tides and the distance back to an access point change the practicalities. Choose your route together rather than letting a distant landmark become an accidental target.
Bring a layer even when the town centre feels warm. A sea breeze can make sitting still much cooler than walking. If you are planning a picnic, keep the weather and tide in mind and have somewhere indoors in reserve.
The beach can also sit around another activity without becoming a second full itinerary. A short walk before a film or after swimming may be all you need.
2. Pick a film at the Scala
The Scala Cinema provides a central indoor date with a clear start and finish. It is a good option for a wet evening, or when one of you would enjoy talking about a film more than choosing another restaurant.
Look through the programme together and choose the film first. The most convenient time is not necessarily the best choice if the genre leaves one person cold. Check whether the listing is an ordinary screening or a special event with different arrangements.
The cinema information explains facilities and accessibility. Contact the venue if you need a particular seat or help with access, rather than leaving that conversation until arrival.
Meet before the film for a drink or a short walk through town. Afterwards, compare the scene you would keep and the one you would happily cut. You do not need identical opinions to have an enjoyable conversation.
3. Book a swim at Nova
Nova offers swimming beside the seafront, giving you an active option that does not depend on sea conditions. It suits people who already know they are comfortable with a pool date and want something informal.
Read the timetable carefully. A lane-swimming session, a lesson and a general swim are different uses of the same pool. Choose a public session that matches what you want to do, then confirm any booking requirements.
Agree on the pace. Swimming together need not mean matching distances or keeping up with somebody’s training routine. If one person wants a serious workout and the other wants a leisurely dip, another activity may give you more time together.
Leave enough time for changing, and arrange a clear meeting point afterwards. Nova also has food facilities, but check their service times separately from the pool. A building being open does not mean every part of it is available.
4. Follow the old railway towards Meliden
The Prestatyn–Dyserth Way follows the former railway through Meliden, offering a different walk from the exposed seafront. Choose a section and a turnaround point before you set out, especially if you are planning food along the way.
At Meliden, Y Shed occupies a former goods shed and tells the village’s mining and quarrying story. Its displays give the route some context: the railway carried the products of work that shaped the surrounding hills.
This makes a good date for people who like a walk with something to discover. Browse the heritage displays, look at the local crafts and check whether the café is serving when you expect to arrive. Food and a modest walk can be enough for the afternoon.
The path is shared with other users, so leave room for cyclists and keep to the signed route. You do not have to reach Dyserth to make the outing worthwhile; a shorter return walk is easier to fit around daylight and energy.
5. Climb Graig Fawr for the view
Graig Fawr, above Meliden, is the choice for a more energetic date. The climb rewards you with a different perspective on the coast and the settlements below, bringing the relationship between sea and hills into view.
Use the National Trust’s route and access information to choose your approach. The higher ground includes uneven terrain and slopes, so this needs suitable shoes and a realistic assessment of how much climbing you both enjoy.
Keep the summit optional. A shared walk is more pleasant when either person can suggest turning back without feeling that they have spoiled the plan. Wind and poor visibility are good reasons to choose the lower railway route or a central indoor activity instead.
Graig Fawr and Y Shed are in the same wider Meliden area, but combining them still needs time. Check the route between them, café opening and your return transport before promising a hill walk followed by a late lunch.
6. Play a round at Prestatyn Golf Club
Prestatyn Golf Club welcomes visiting golfers, making it a possible date for two people who already enjoy the game. The coastal setting adds interest, while a booked tee time gives you a reason to set aside several hours together.
Be honest about experience before reserving. A full golf course is a different commitment from a casual putting game, and somebody who has never played may prefer an introductory lesson elsewhere. Ask the club about visitor requirements, equipment and the most suitable arrangements for your standard.
Check the current course status as well as the weather. Conditions can affect play, and wind adds another challenge on the coast. Allow time to arrive, prepare and find the first tee rather than treating the booking time as your arrival time.
If you want food afterwards, confirm clubhouse service separately. The best version of this date leaves room to enjoy the round, including the imperfect shots, rather than making the score the only thing you remember.
Choose a plan that fits
A short first meeting: start near Nova and take a manageable promenade walk, with an indoor drink as the natural next step.
A gentle afternoon: choose a section of the Prestatyn–Dyserth Way and visit Y Shed during its opening hours. Save the summit walk for a day when you both want the climb.
An indoor date: choose a Scala film or a suitable swimming session at Nova. Make space for conversation before or afterwards.
Travel and other places to try
Prestatyn has a mainline railway station in town. Check the walking route to the seafront, and treat Meliden and Graig Fawr as separate destinations when planning onward travel. A rail arrival does not automatically make every activity walkable for every visitor.
For another setting, our Denbighshire date guide links Rhyl, Denbigh and Ruthin with separate gardens, historic houses, reservoir visits and Dee Valley journeys. Choose one main outing rather than trying to cover the county in a day.
