Derry~Londonderry gives you several ways to build a date without leaving the city. Walk above the streets on the walls, look at contemporary art, compare favourite television moments or cross the Foyle for a different view. In the evening, choose a performance or a game of bowling.
These eight Derry date ideas mix short stops with experiences worth booking around. The city has hills, and the railway station, centre and Pennyburn entertainment complex are not all in the same place. Pick a few ideas that fit together geographically, leaving time for food and conversation.
1. Get your bearings on the city walls
The seventeenth-century city walls form a circuit of roughly 1.5 kilometres around the inner city. They offer an unusually clear way to understand its layout while enjoying changing views over streets, buildings and the surrounding city.
Walk at a pace that lets you stop and look. You can follow the circuit independently or choose a guided tour if you want more historical context. The latter is useful when you would rather listen and ask questions than keep checking your phone.
Allow more time than the distance alone suggests. Access points, slopes and surfaces vary, so check a suitable route if steps are difficult. Wear shoes with grip and choose daylight for an easier first visit.
2. Share favourite scenes at the Derry Girls Experience
The Derry Girls Experience at the Tower Museum gives fans a chance to see material associated with the television series. It is a playful indoor choice if you both know the characters, with plenty to talk about afterwards.
The museum’s offer is changing. The older Story of Derry and Armada exhibitions should not be assumed to remain part of your visit. Check the current exhibition and ticket information, including what is available alongside the Derry Girls displays.
If only one of you knows the programme, agree whether this is still the right choice. A short introduction beforehand may help, but nobody needs a homework assignment for a date. Leave time afterwards to compare the scenes and characters you remembered differently.
3. Browse the Craft Village together
The Craft Village offers a change of scale from the busier city streets. Its small shops and creative businesses make it a good place to slow down and look at what people are making and selling.
Choose a small browsing challenge if you want an easy conversation starter. You might each find something that would suit the other’s home, or pick a favourite material or colour. There is no need to buy anything for the stop to be enjoyable.
Individual businesses keep their own hours, so check any particular shop you want to visit. A daytime browse fits naturally with a central lunch or coffee. Do not assume an evening theatre booking means the craft shops will still be open beforehand.
4. Give contemporary art a chance at Void
Void Art Centre is a useful date choice when you want something to react to together. Its contemporary-art programme changes, which means the current exhibition should guide both your expectations and the timing of your visit.
You do not need matching opinions or specialist knowledge. Spend a little time looking separately, then compare the work that held your attention. Talking about why a piece interested, puzzled or frustrated you can be more revealing than trying to agree on what it means.
Check the exhibition dates and visitor information, including any closure between installations. Workshops and events may have separate booking requirements. Allow enough time to engage with the work, then leave room for a conversation over a drink elsewhere.
5. Cross the Peace Bridge towards Ebrington
The Peace Bridge connects the cityside and Waterside across the River Foyle. Its curves and river views make the crossing a date in its own right, especially when you continue towards Ebrington rather than immediately turning back.
This is the more open, riverside counterpart to a walk on the walls. Use it for an unhurried conversation, with pauses to look back towards the city. You can decide in advance whether food on the far side or a return to the centre suits you better.
The bridge is shared with cyclists, so keep aware of other users. Bring a layer for the exposed crossing and check your onward route. A short distance on the map can include slopes or a longer approach than expected.
6. Choose a performance at the Millennium Forum
The Millennium Forum makes an evening plan easy to anchor. Start with the current programme and choose a show, concert or comedy performance that appeals to both of you.
Book seats together and leave a sensible gap after dinner. Rushing through a meal to reach the auditorium tends to remove the relaxed part of the evening. If the performance is the treat, keep the food plan simple and close enough to fit comfortably.
Check the finish time before arranging transport, and contact the box office about accessible seating or any performance-specific needs. Afterwards, compare the moment you each enjoyed most. You may find that you noticed entirely different things on the same stage.
7. Play a game at Brunswick Moviebowl
Brunswick Moviebowl combines ten-pin bowling with cinema and food options at Pennyburn. Choose bowling when you want an activity that leaves space for talking between turns, or compare film listings for a quieter evening.
Keep the competition light. One game can be enough to give the date a shared focus, particularly if neither of you bowls regularly. If you add a meal or screening, check the timing and what any package actually includes.
The complex is outside the compact walled centre, so plan a separate journey. Reserve the relevant activity and check the return transport before committing to a late finish. A cinema ticket and a bowling booking are not interchangeable, even though they share a venue.
8. Pause inside St Columb’s Cathedral
St Columb’s Cathedral gives a city date a quieter architectural stop. Its setting within the walls makes it possible to combine with nearby sights without turning the afternoon into a succession of long transfers.
Take time to look at the building and the historical material available during your visit. This works best when both of you enjoy a slower, reflective stop, rather than treating the cathedral as somewhere to hurry through between other attractions.
It remains a working place of worship. Check visiting arrangements, services and any admission information, and follow the rules on photography. If a service or private event affects access, adjust your plan respectfully and return another time.
Three date plans to try
A relaxed first meeting: browse the Craft Village and stop for coffee. If you both want to continue, add a manageable section of the walls. Keeping the initial plan short leaves room for the date to develop naturally.
An art and river afternoon: visit Void during its exhibition hours, have lunch, then cross the Peace Bridge towards Ebrington. Choose the river walk length according to the weather. A café conversation can replace the longer outdoor section if necessary.
A playful evening: reserve bowling at Brunswick Moviebowl and arrange food around the game. Alternatively, choose a Millennium Forum performance and a central meal. These are separate evening plans, so there is no need to fit both into one night.
Getting around the city
Use Translink for rail and bus connections and current local services. The railway station is on the Waterside, so include the transfer into the centre. Check the last return service before choosing a performance or late film.
Many central ideas combine on foot, but hills and changes in level matter. Ask venues about access routes if needed, and give Pennyburn its own travel allowance. For a wider day out, use our County Londonderry date guide to compare towns, coast and countryside.
Derry date questions
Is this guide for Derry or Londonderry?
Both names refer to the same city. This guide uses Derry~Londonderry for the destination and the shorter Derry in some planning references. The county guide covers the wider area, also known as County Derry.
What works well in wet weather?
Check Void’s exhibition, the current Tower Museum offer, a cathedral visit, bowling or a performance. Each has its own opening or booking arrangements. Keep the river crossing and walls flexible when wind and rain make an outdoor plan less comfortable.
Do we need a car?
You can build a central date around public transport and walking. A Pennyburn evening or a countryside extension needs more planning than the central attractions.
